Benefits of Girl Scout Camp

[This post originally appeared on gswnyblog.com]

Deciding what activities for your girl to be a part of can be challenging considering all the options. This is especially true come summer with different camp opportunities and ways for them to spend their free time. You want what’s best for your girl, and so do we, which is why we think Girl Scout camp is the place to be.

There are a lot of places where your girl can have fun, but at Girl Scouts she has the unique experience of combining fun and unforgettable activities with learning key lessons to carry her through life. It’s not just our goal; we see it in the lives of our girls.

We hear stories about how our program helped our leaders of today, but there’s a special spark that happens when they start talking about camp. Something about the experience stays with them and helped shape them into the woman they became.

Girls attend camp for the first time shy and unsure, but they don’t stay that way for long. It’s truly wonderful to witness.

These experiences aren’t by chance or accident. Girl Scout Summer Camp has four key benefits in mind that go into the planning each year.

  1. Develop and cultivate girls’ self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, and self-respect.
  2. Build girls of courage, confidence, and character by providing opportunities for girls to experience camp life on their own.
  3. Focus on the 3 keys to leadership: discover new skills within themselves, connect with others through team building and problem solving, and take action by making things better at camp and in their communities.
  4. Provide a safe environment that encourages leadership, imagination, and acceptance as well as a community where girls feel less at risk.

Don’t forget about financial aid for camp!

It’s Girl Scout Camp Week and in only a few months, it will be time for summer camp. As you’re thinking about what your girl will do this summer, consider sending her to Girl Scout camp. We have the financial aid options available to make sure your girl can experience camp.

At Girl Scouts, we believe in the value of camp. Since our beginnings, getting girls outside has been one of our primary areas of focus. In fact, it currently stands as one of our four program pillars – STEM, Life Skills, Entrepreneurship, and Outdoors.

Knowing how important it is for girls to go outdoors, we want to make sure every girl has the opportunity. Our goal is always to make sure that no one is excluded from our program for any reason, including financial.

If your girl is a member of Girl Scouts of Western New York, we have financial aid options available for her. The Summer Camp Financial Assistance Application needs to be completed asap for consideration.

To apply, register for camp and fill out the financial aid application included. Physical forms can be picked up at our service centers.

Let’s celebrate Girl Scout Camp Week together!

Camp Memories: Aurora Borealis

A few weeks ago, the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, prepared to make an appearance in the Western New York area. Caused by a geomagnetic storm, meteorologists explain that it’s a coronal mass ejection, or “a large cloud of charged particles from the solar corona.”

What we see is a beautiful swath of multicolored lights filling the sky.

Once we heard about the occurrence, we shared the story from WROC with our council via Facebook and found out that everyone loves the lights as much as we do. More than just sharing and engaging, people were sharing their own stories.

Former camper turned camp staff member Paula shared one of her fondest memories.

“As a kid I saw the northern lights while winter camping at Seven Hills. We took a night hike to Hunter’s Cabin and saw them over the pond. It was incredible! One of my favorite childhood Girl Scout memories!”

Paula is better known as Zoe in our world of camp. This year, she’s our Camp Director at Camp Timbercrest.

We can’t wait for another year of camp, and another season of favorite memories.
